The Lost Child

One morning I woke and a child was gone.

I looked in the yard; he was not on the lawn.

I looked in his room, nothing there but the walls.

I checked the whole house, yes, even looked in the halls.

I rang the police to explain my position. They're the ones you should call when someone is missin'.

I told them he'd begged for some time with his friends, but I put him to work, yes his work never ends.

He wanted some candy, but I told him no, for candy is bad for your teeth, don't you know?

Officer, please never mind, for you see,
that the child that was lost, is the child that was me.
